An 1827 document registering the birth of a slave, Cape Town, 1827, as the property of ''Mrs tho widow Maria Catharina Wiid born Le Roex''. A male infant named Sam, born on the 1st July 1827, his mother named Rachel, Slave Registry Office, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Town, signed by the Registrar, G.L. Rogers. Not a birth certificate, but the owner's registration of the child as his slave, having been born to one of his slaves. A sobering historical document.
