ANTONY JASPER MAITLAND (1935-2025): A mixed media painted wood panel on ply board depicting stylised seed heads. Unsigned. 152.5cm x 50cm (some losses along bottom edge)
Antony Maitland was a British children's author and illustrator of the 1960s to the early 1980s. During his career, Maitland drew for authors Leon Garfield and Ruth Ainsworth amongst others. For his drawings, Maitland won the 1961 Kate Greenaway Medal for Mrs. Cockle's Cat by Philippa Pearce. He also wrote and illustrated his own children’s books including Idle Jack. After British Army national service as an intelligence officer in the late 1950’s, Maitland toured Europe and the Middle East before embarking on a career in illustration. He was also an accomplished interior designer as well as theatre costume and set designer, had designed for The National Portrait Gallery, Madame Tussauds and the Shah of Iran.
