William Salisbury: 'The Squareheads, The Story of a Socialized State - A Futuristic Novel', New York, The Independent Publishing Company, 1929, 1st edition, foreword by W. Adolphe Roberts, 168pp, original pictorial wraps. Strange and well written speculative Science Fiction novel in which a pilot loses consciousness during a stunt, enters suspended animation, awakening 400 years in the future to find that America, now known as Usofmera, has proceeded so far with standardisation that individualism has been snuffed out, and the people are, quite literally, cubic in shape. Little is known of William Salisbury. He was born in 1875, wrote a well-received dystopian novel, The American Emperor, in 1913, but was unsuccessful with further publications. By the 1920s he was writing occasional stories for the magazine American Parade, edited by the Jamaican-born Walter Adolphe Roberts, who wrote the foreword for this book. Very scarce
