£1,000 - £1,500
JOHN WITHERSTON OF HEREFORD: A late 17th / early 18th Century basket-top striking and chiming bracket clock, the pierced brass bell top over an ebonised case with pierced brass side frets, square brass dial with corner cherub spandrels, silvered Roman chapter ring, blued steel hands and date aperture. The dial and backplate signed John Witherston Hereford, highly engraved backplate with three quarter chiming bells and single hourly strike bell, recoil escapement (possibly converted from verge) with pendulum. 43cm high x 28cm wide x 17cm deep.
Case appears to be missing finials and holes filled in. Various loose elements including fret sides. Splits to lacquer. Appears as though there may have been alterations made in the past to the movement including a possible repeat function for carillon. Some vacant threaded holes. Issue with motion works - hour hand not moving when minute hands moved. Feels stiff. Doesn't function.
