Joseph Whitaker: 'Scribblings of a Hedgerow Naturalist', Nottingham, Walter Black & Co, 1904, 1st edition, Autograph Letter Signed from the author to Thomas Parkin (1845-1932), ornithologist of High Wickham, nr Hastings, on Rainworth Lodge headed paper, [4]pp, loosely inserted, plus Autograph Postcard Signed from Whitaker to Parkin, postmarked November 29, 1904, typed transcription of letter by Andrew Pierssene loosely inserted, portrait frontis + 15 illustrations from photographs on 12 full page plates, and 4 wood engraved ills. in text complete, armorial bookplate of Thomas Parkin to front pastedown, and his manuscript pen & ink ownership inscription to verso of FFEP, original pictorial cloth; together with two other inscribed naturalist books, comprising Rev. W. Johnson: 'Nature and Naturalists', London, H.R. Allenson; Durham, Willan & Smith, [1903], 1st edition, inscribed by the author on FFEP, 171pp, illustrations from photographs, orig. pictorial cloth gilt, F. howard Lancum: 'Memoirs of a Field Naturalist', [1928], inscribed by author on FFEP, frontis + 7 plates complete, original cloth gilt. From the collection of Andrew Pierssené (1929-2025), author, Professor of Environmental Interpretation, and life-long naturalist and book collector. Born in Rugby, and following his graduation from Oxford in 1953 with a Masters degree in English Language and Literature, Andrew was involved in youth work in London, founding the OK club, a charity which is still running. After moving to Norwich in 1964, he became Chairman for the Council for Nature Youth Committee, as well as founding Norfolk Young Naturalists. Throughout his life Andrew amassed an extensive collection of Ornithology and Natural History books, and had a particular skill for acquiring and identifying signed and association copies of various works. He authored the 1998 book ‘Explaining Our World: An Approach to the Art of Environmental Interpretation’, and with his vast knowledge contributed articles for a variety of wildlife, local history and natural history magazines and publications.
