Tisa von der Schulenburg (1903-2001), a collection of 13 lithograph prints, being memoirs of County Durham, circa 1970's, each pencil numbered and signed?, each approx. 42 x 30cm, mounted on card leaves (50 x 33cm), housed in brown paper wrapper, manuscript pen & ink title/inscription by Tisa Schulenburg "Durham Report...13 prints 7/20 Tisa Schulenburg URSULASTR : 12 427 DORSTEN W. Germany". Tisa Schulenburg (1903-2001) was born into Prussian nobility and became an acquaintance of many prominent figures of the time including Bertold Brecht, George Grosz, Albert Einstein and Heinrich and Thomas Mann. She also met the wealthy Jewish entrepreneur Fritz Hess whom she married in 1931, much to the chagrin of her anti-semitic father. With the rise of fascism and persecution of the "active left", she emigrated to the UK from Germany during the 1930s, where she joined the anti-fascist Artists International Association. In England she quickly became an acquaintance of the artists Henry Moore, Vanessa and Clive Bell, Duncan Grant, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. She spent two years in Spennymoor, County Durham, leading workshops and talks for local miners and promoting their art and culture. These drawings recall and reconstruct her lost notes and drawings from that time.
