(Ornithology, J.G. Keulemans.) Johann Andreas Naumann; Carl Richard Hennicke & others (ed.): 'Naturgeschichte der Vogel Mitteleuropas', Gera-Untermhaus, Fr. Eugen Kohler, [1895]-1905, [3rd edition], 12 volumes, 439 chromolithograph plates as called for, comprising 390 chromolithograph plates of birds, 49 chromolithograph plates of eggs, plus 10 plain plates and numerous in text illustrations, folio (39 x 29cm), original publisher's half red cloth, with the bookplate (depicting a Nightjar) of the ornithological biblophile Peter Tate (b.1926), author of 'A Century of Bird Books' and other ornithological works. "439 chromolithographs from entirely new drawings and the text entirely rewritten to become the most scholarly and complete ornithological text book of its time (perhaps of any time)"-Fine Bird Boks. It is also one of the best illustrated with superb plates by KEULEMANS and a number of equally talented bird artists of the time. The scope of this great work is far wider than its title suggests, birds from all parts of Europe and neighbouring countries being thoroughly covered. Thelast volume includes a 40 page coverage of the Great Auk with 2 coloured plates (one featuring 4 eggs) as well as 3 plates showing skeletal remains and stuffed specimens. Fine Bird Books p.96, Nissen, 667 (p.148) gives the names of the various artists. The revised and enlarged edition of Naumann's classic work (first published 1795-1817). A collaboration of some forty contributors, the bright and profuse plates all having been re-drawn to show the birds in their natural surroundings. (12)
