STEPHEN ASSELIN OF LONDON (1670-1744): A green lacquer striking and chiming bracket clock, the gilt dial with calendar and pendulum apertures, subsidiary dials for hours and quarter strike/silent and a painted lunar disk to the arch. The three train movement with verge escapement and chiming on six bells, the backplate with engraved arabesque foliage, supporting a putto, inverted bell-top case with carry handle to top, red and gilt chinoiseries on a green ground. Together with later ogee moulded bracket. With winding key, door key, pendulum and Sotheby's sale catalogue excerpt from February 3rd 1961. 46cm high, 30cm wide, 21cm deep. Bracket 35cm wide x 24cm deep x 16cm high. Some signs of adaptations.
MOVEMENT: Hour hand out of synch to strike train. Chiming, striking and going trains function but require attention. Movement in poor condition. Dirty and signs of corrosion and dry oils. With power on each gear train, chime out of sequence / not landing correctly but lift and drop. Movement appears to be complete though. Front door does not open which restricts appraisal. Gut lines present. Pendulum present. Possible reconversion. CASE: Structurally sound. Splits in back door chinoiserie. Doors fixed by nails. Original colours appear to be dark green. Brass mesh looks old as does silks. Front door has sticky lock. There is slightly different engraving to the brackets which hold the movement and crude holes to case side screws. Could be later. Some damage to fretwork, wear to paint. Loss to above rear door. Cut-out to base (shown in images)
perhaps to accommodate a different pendulum. BRACKET: Appears to have been repainted.
