Winston S. Churchill: 'The World Crisis 1911-1918. [Complete in six volumes]', London, Thornton Butterworth, 1923-1931, 6 volumes, volume 1 April 1923, 2nd edition (published the same month as the 1st edition), volume 5 March 1929, 2nd impression (published the same month as the 1st edition, volumes 2-4 & 6 1st editions, 1st impressions, 9 plates, 48 maps (many folding), two facsimiles and eighty-two diagrams in the text, collated complete/as called for, bound in navy half morocco gilt, spines with raised bands, each gilt ruled in six compartments, gilt lettering and gilt 'lion rampant' motifs in compartments, top edges gilt. Churchill's comprehensive account of the Great War, that is both analytical, and on occasions a justification from the author for his part in the proceedings. It is claimed that Churchill considered the work "not history, but a contribution to history." Since its publication both biographers and historians have considered it Churchill's masterpiece, eclipsing his better-known account 'The Second World War.' Indeed, T.E. Lawrence regarded the second volume, '1915', as "far and away the best war-book I've yet read." (6)
