[The Waterhouse family of Halifax were the lessees of major interests in that town and elsewhere in Yorkshire from the prior and convents of Lewes in Sussex, lords of the town. Robert Waterhouse of Halifax was the father of John, George and Gregory Waterhouse: West Yorkshire Archive Service, Leeds, WYL 100/HX/A/38, 45. In 1572 Robert and Gregory were in dispute with the parishioners of Halifax over tithes: Yorkshire Archaeological Society DD99/B3/1.
