Mikhail Bulgakov: 'The Master and Margarita', London, Collins Harvill, November 1967, 2nd impression of the 1st UK edition, translated from the Russian by Michael Glenny, original cloth gilt, dust wrapper (slightly worn, 30s price intact, identical to the first impression dust wrapper in every respect). The author's best known novel, published posthumously, widely regarded by critics as a masterpiece of 20th Century literature, as well as the foremost of Soviet satires. The story concerns a visit by the devil and his entourage to the officially atheistic Soviet Union. The devil, manifested as one Professor Woland, challenges the Soviet citizens' beliefs towards religion and condemns their behavior throughout the book. Stated by Mick Jagger as the inspiration for him writing The Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil"; together with Alexander Solzhenitsyn: 'The Gulag Archipelago. 1918 - 1956. An Experiment in Literary Investigation', L, Collins Harvill, 1974-1978, 1st UK edition, seven parts in 3 volumes, original cloth gilt, dust wrappers. First British edition of Solzhenitsyn's epic non-fiction masterpiece; Vladimir Nabokov: 'Speak, Memory', L, Victor Gollancz, 1951, 1st UK edition, original cloth (5)
