Essex. [Thomas Kitson Cromwell]: 'Excursions in the County of Essex', London, Longman et al, 1818, First Edition, 2 vols, contemporary half calf and marbled paper boards, spines elegantly panelled in gilt and with double morocco labels. Both vols with handsome bookplate on endpaper. Bindings just lightly scuffed or rubbed at extremities, an excellent set. Vol 1 with pp.iv title and preface + [2] directions to binder + [2] directions to subscribers + 224; and Vol 2 with pp.[ii] title + [2] directions to binder + 197 + [198–199] blank + [200] with printer’s imprint (this final leaf often lacking). With engraved title-pages (a little dusty or spotted from adjacent folded maps), and with folding map of Essex + additional folding map of Colchester. Vol 1 with 54 plates and Vol 2 with 40 plates as listed (plates with some dust soiling and dulling). Variant Copy : The first 38pp of Vol 1 have been re-set (and p.1 slightly rewritten) compared with standard copies. As a result of this re-setting, the text here spreads over an additional two pages. The publishers have dealt with this by the inclusion of an additional leaf signed C* and paginated 37* and 38*. Bookplates of Cuthbert Tuke Taylor, of The Grange, Hoddesden, in Hertfordshire. The Taylor family were leading Quakers in Saffron Walden. Thomas Kitson Cromwell (1792–1870), after employment in the literary department of Longmans, the publisher of this title, became an English dissenting minister. He issued a volume of poetry, wrote two dramas, and a biography of Oliver Cromwell. As a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Cromwell wrote the text for Storer’s Cathedral Churches of Great Britain, contributed to the journals, and issued four sets of two-volume Excursions (Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Sussex).; together with [Peter Muilman]: 'A New and Complete History of Essex, From a Late Survey...By a Gentleman', Chelmsford, Lionel Halsall, 1770, volume 2 only (of 6 volumes), 406pp, copper engraved title page + engraved plate of Dynes Hall, the seat of Henry Sperling Esquire, near Castle Hedingham. 19th century marbled paper boards, handsome modern quarter calf spine with red morocco label. scarce (3)
